I have the sensor fitted behind the front bumper and a window (currently blank) in the bottom half of the dash cluster between the speedo and rev counter but on which nothing shows. I assume the climate control must get the outside air

Itis a common mistake that is made at most dealerships. The oil temp sender is with the oil level sensor on the bottom of the oil pan. The cheap sensor you found is on the 2.8 engine not the 2.7t. This is from my own experience. Good luck. One more thing, get the oem hella unit. Any questions feel free to pm me.

The temperature outside was about 5 C (40 F), and the car has been parked for 5 or 6 hours. Took VAG-COM to it, took measurements of intake temperature sensor.
