Cross-class utility is a lot less important. GladiusNocturno. Not really the most commonly used on all meta builds, but staff is the weapon available to most proffessions. The only proffessions that cant use it are warrior and Engineer. Symmol. Actually Sword is the most available weapon, only Necro can't use it.
Elementalist - top dps in the game, has easier time getting into groups compared to other DPS classes. Guardian/Engineer - top tier dps and much easier to play than elementalist. 2) PvP: Mesmers - Overpowered as of right now. Necros - was always top tier in spvp and wvw but looked down on in pve.
Tank: In GW2 PvE, this is usually fulfilled by a character with very high damage evasion or immunity (rather than mitigation) that also brings with it unique buffs for the raid. Chronomancer was always the go-to in this regard in HoT days, now there are a few other professions that can also fill the role- Renegade with an alacrity build or
ztyEjj. It's hard to make a singular tierlist for builds in this game. Most people kinda agree the game is really easy, but then you have someone like MightyTeapot (which is probably where you need to go for a decent tierlist) make a bunch of tierlists that extremely heavily factor in ''making things easier'', which is a philosophy I dont really subscribe to, the permanent-training-wheels approach in
As for Ranger as a starter class, the pet can make exploring the world on your first character pretty fun. Ranger also has one of the strongest downstates in the game, making it very forgiving if you die. I recommend it as a very good beginner class that is still top-tier once you reach endgame.
For PVE I'd say Renegade is a great choice. Revenant overall is probably the best class right now because it has strong DPS builds as well as a strong Quickness and Alacrity build (Renegade is the alacrity build). Renegade is also strong in Open World and the Condition Vindicator build is basically unkillable. 1.
Dual swords aren't a terribly meta combination. You have four options, though: Mesmer is the top choice. Power Chrono is the only meta build that actively wants to run dual swords, and is a quite strong, though underplayed, DPS option that can also spec for Quickness support.
The two main reasons are: Lots of utility. Revenants are unique in that they get access to two sets of utility skills (including heal and elite) on top of the weapon swap. You choose two legends out of a possible five for a given elite spec, and each legend comes with their own set of utility skills.
